The Artists: A Closer Look
At the heart of the performance is tenor Avery Smith, an emerging operatic artist from Southwestern Virginia. Known for his mastery of the Verdi repertoire, Avery has developed his voice under the guidance of Mark Owen Davis at Master’s Voice Studio and the renowned mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick at her Institute for Young Dramatic Voices. Avery’s impressive career includes recital performances, a debut with the Paramount Chamber Players, and the creation of the role of “Oswald” in the premiere of Baroness by composer Scott Wheeler. When not captivating audiences with his voice, Avery serves as Lead Naturalist at Hungry Mother State Park, educating visitors on the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
Joining Avery on stage will be Steve Sensenig, a pianist of remarkable versatility and accomplishment. A graduate of Cairn University with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance, Steve began accompanying singers and choirs at the age of 13 and has since built a diverse career. He has served as musical director for Barter Theatre and Norwegian Creative Studios, and collaborated with world-class artists, including Celtic Woman’s Chloë Agnew and Metropolitan Opera tenor Aaron Blake. In addition to performing, Steve is a prolific arranger, orchestrator, and film composer who has worked on projects ranging from symphonic orchestrations to Hollywood film scores. Steve resides in Bristol, TN, with his daughter Dolly.
A Blend of Music and Art
This special event goes beyond music, with Kay Sutherland’s artwork transforming the venue into a visual feast. Sutherland’s pieces, known for their vibrant colors and emotional depth, provide a perfect backdrop to the evening’s performances. Guests will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the synergy of visual and performing arts, creating an experience that’s both inspiring and unforgettable.
